Early Beginnings and Military Roots
The deep roots of our parish trace back to the British occupation of Moose Island. During this time, Anglican and Episcopal clergy held the region’s very first services. Initially, these early gatherings took place inside local military barracks and private homes. Sometimes, the faithful met in neighboring civic institutions. Eventually, these warm gatherings laid the foundation for our enduring community of faith.
Building Our Historic Sanctuary at 21 Key Street
In 1857, dedicated workers finally broke ground on our historic sanctuary at 21 Key Street. Since then, this enduring structure has successfully protected our congregation for nearly 170 years. The building has stood strong through severe coastal storms, historic fires, and economic depressions. Furthermore, it has survived shifting local industries. Within these sacred walls, generations of Eastport residents have celebrated baptisms, marriages, and weekly worship.
Expanding the Parish: The Institute and Beyond
As the congregation grew, we needed more space. Therefore, in 1901, the parish constructed a multi-purpose parish hall. Today, Eastport locals still affectionately call this building “the Institute.” For over a century, this facility has allowed us to serve warm meals. Most importantly, it helps us provide physical comfort to neighbors and visitors facing hard times.
Enhancing Worship with the Historic Kilgen Organ
In 2002, our parish acquired a vintage 1885 Kilgen tracker organ. We safely shipped this beautiful instrument all the way from Lincoln, Nebraska, to its new home here in Maine. Currently, this historic tracker organ serves as an immense source of pride and joy. It beautifully elevates our musical worship to a higher spiritual plane.
Celebrating 150 Years and Looking to the Future
In 2007, the Right Reverend Chilton R. Knudsen led a massive community celebration. This event marked our 150th anniversary and rededicated our historic worship space. Because of the generous giving of time, talent, and treasure, our friends and family continue to secure a vibrant Episcopal presence.
Although we celebrated our 150th anniversary nearly two decades ago, our mission remains unchanged. We have adapted over time, but God’s love for us has stood still. Therefore, we invite you to join us in putting faith into action. Come worship with us each Sunday as a visitor, a local resident, or a seasonal traveler.

- New to You Thrift Shop: Opened in 1992 at 9 Brighton Avenue, this boutique supplies affordable clothing and household items to the local community. [1]
- Ecumenical Partnerships: As active members of the Greater Eastport Ecumenical Churches’ Association, we directly sponsor the Labor of Love Nutrition Center, the Garrapy Food Pantry, and local emergency heating assistance funds.
- Civic Engagement: Our parishioners regularly dedicate their time to the local public library, the volunteer fire department, local hospice care, the Eastport Arts Center, and community gardens.
- Welcoming visitors from international cruise ships and summer Maine tourists
